BPSU team is CSC Pag-asa regional awardee

The BPSU Community-Based Rice-Mushroom Technology and Innovations for Sustainable Development in Bataan Team is Civil Service Commission Pag-asa Award Regional Winner (Group Category). The members of the team are Team Leader Dr. Rina Q. Paguia, Study Leader Michael.Babat, and Staff Mirasol Macaranas Rosanes. Paguia is BPSU Abucay campus Extension and Training Services chairperson. CSC awarding ceremony is scheduled September, this year.

Thirty farmers are included in the project -10 from Orani, 10 from Pilar, and 10 from.Balanga City. It started with five (5) farmers from each town in 2018.

Paguia said rice farmers will utilize the palay straws (dayami) to propagate the mushroom. When harvested, aside from selling mushroom, farmers are also taught to process mushroom into products.

The palay straws will then be used as compost and combining it with earthworms, to produce vermicast.The organic fertilizer vermicast will then be used for planting vegetables like eggplant, tomato, and chilli.

Paguia said farmers saw increased productivity by adopting science-based technology and innovations in farming. She revealed farmers who are part the project raised their earnings by 20 percent.
